Armand doesn’t live here…

…for a week. I’m leaving my blog in the hands of Chris and James, two very good friends of mine, whilst I’m on vacation.

Chris is friend from University who worked on the student paper with us. He’s the man who got me into blogging – he blogs more seriously and more thoroughly than I do over on his own site, and talks about lots of issues I steer well clear of. That said, he has told me that he looks forward to blogging “Armand style” for a bit, so I’m vaguely worried about what that means. Chris is an Arsenal fan.

James was at college with me and has, over the years, introduced me to a disturbing number of genres of bizarre Japanese film. He’s a deeply funny man, but hasn’t blogged before so be especially nice. He’s a fellow Spurs fan, so I expect him to stand up to Chris if necessary.

All I’ve asked them to be wary of is language and NSFW content, as, amongst others, my parents occasionally visit here… so I think you’ll be in for an interesting week, and I look forward to catching up on my return.

Off to pack now… catch y’all soon!

Blogsitting

Has anyone tried Blogsitter? I’m away next week and wondering if I can get someone to write interesting things here for a week… Sheila has done it in the past but doesn’t have time at the moment.

If you’d be interested in the job, leave me a comment telling me why, or email me via the usual means (deets in the sidebar). I’d appreciate it and pay you in Mars bars!

Web 2.0 software wishlist – party and holiday planning

Ok, Lifehacker. I throw down a challenge.

I would like a web tool that helps me organise a night out where I need to check everyone’s availability, take suggestions for what to do and (democratically) or otherwise choose the best course of action for a group. I know about evite and mypunchbowl, but when you don’t know what the date is going to be, how do you avoid those reply-to-all-fests?

I would also like a piece of software to help me organise holidays. Gauge requirements, collect details where required, check dates, budget, etc.

If these don’t exist, would someone start something that does them quick and let me know? Rather than trying for another social networking site or social bookmarking site… etc? I’ll probably even pay to use one if there’s a decent, not-too-expensive one out there.

Mama receives an award

My mum won a prize for her doctoral thesis, “Language Shift amongst the Sindhis of Malaysia”, and received the award today. There was a live webcast which we managed to catch part of before work, very proudly, during the course of which she received a fantastic introduction and delivered a great speech, including an overview of her thesis. Many of my family were present (if the replay becomes available, you’ll see my Dad taking a bow for his role in supporting Mama ;-))

Congrats Ma!

The gentlemans’ club

Pleased as I am with Soho house, I kind of like the idea of old school social club, like Phoenix Nights, or those places with old men playing pool in Stoke Newington. How do you get involved in that sort of thing? Where are those clubs?

I need somewhere else good to play pool, that isn’t the Elbow Room*… And maybe jam. Like Buena Vista.

* not that there’s anything wrong with that. But variety, y’know?

Everyone else has got more links than me

To the tune of

Everyone else has got more links than me
ohhh ohhh
Everyone else has got more links than me
ohhh ohhh

Everyone else has got more links than me
Does anyone else get that feeling?
Scary duck, Scoble, Gaping Void;
Everyone’s on Technorati;

Everyone else has got more links than me
ohhh ohhh
Everyone else has got more links than me
ohhh ohhh

Silly anecdotes and big tech news;
Talk about it and they’ll talk about you
But whenever I ego surf
I’m not in the top one mill…

Everyone else has got more links than me
ohhh ohhh
Everyone else has got more links than me
ohhh ohhh

Please submit alternate/better lyrics ;-) – I’m clearly in a parody mood. Tom and Chris provided the inspiration for this one. Apologies to the genius that is TISM.

Soho House application advice

I’ve recently been accepted to membership at Soho House, a belated birthday present from my parents. The youth (Under 27) membership is good value and I’m looking forward to making use of the free screenings I’m entitled to, amongst other things.

I’d like to share, though, the ’25 words about myself’ that helped me obtain said membership. It’s not against the club by-laws to publish these (I’ve checked) and I think they were inspired. Of course, I didn’t write them: I really dislike those self-reflective, inane personality profiles. I wrote to a few friends and asked them how they’d describe me in 25 words. Matt, of course, wrote an expletive down 25 times, but Rach was inspired. She had three drafts for me, of which I chose:

Armand is much like David Hasselhoff. He’s not cool now, but he may be in 25 years. In Germany, anyway

There you have it. Me in the proverbial nutshell.

Curse those trapped nerves

Have injured something so need to keep typing to a minimum. Normal service will be resumed shortly.

Update: Apparently, whatever I have isn’t causing me damage, just pain. And medical advice is to work through it, so I’ll be typing just for the hell of it. Expect blog posts Seinfeld style over the weekend.
