(1) Got tickets to Glasto. Woo! My first ever festival. Very exciting.
(2) Witnessed Spurs victory – we played a decent game and glad it came out a victory.
(3) Saw the first episode of the new Dr Who – which is excellent. The new companion is cool, but mainly: the moon. Space Rhino Police. What more could you possibly ask for?
(4) Got tickets to see Hot Fuzz in a couple of weeks. Finally!
…and apologies to my regular readers. Normal service will resume shortly.
Had a fun interview with CNN’s Jim Boulden just now, about the same ViadeoresearchI wrote about yesterday. We covered much the same ground and he interviewed our HR manager as well, so will be an interesting piece when it airs, on one of their business programmes today or tomorrow. They did a close up shot of me accessing this site, though, so am curious as to whether I’ll get a flood of visitors tomorrow…
Had a nice chat with Jim whilst the lights, etc., were being set up — we talked about codeswitching, something my mother looks at as part of her socio-linguistic research. I adapt to accents – particularly American accents – much to the chagrin of my more English friends. I think I managed to sustain a consistent British-ish accent for the interview, but let me know what you think if you see it. Jim has lived in the UK for 17 years (he’s American), but his kids speak with fully British accents. Must be an interesting house!
My invite to the new net TV system from the Skype folk came through – yay! It’s installed and currently fighting with Vista (although a quick Google indicates there are no fundamental incompatibilities)… When I get it working you can expect reports.
Please can someone send me these? I’d really like to see what they look like.
For those who don’t know, Joost is an internet TV service that’s undergoing a trial phase. It was created by the founders of Skype. The BBC iPlayer is another internet TV service for BBC programming – an evolution of the BBC iMP, which I tested last year.
I like to be up with these cool tech trends but have been left off the list this time :-( — hoping someone can send them my way soon! Thanks.
If you missed it, I’m sure it’ll repeat on More4 soon. Whatever you think of the sentiment, this is a stunning piece of television; beautifully shot, great timing, fantastic music. Just really well put together.
Oh, and Sophie Winkleman (who I was at college with) is in it.
If you don’t know what it is, it’s the year 2010 and Tony’s about to hand over the leadership to his successor. But Mr Blair has got more in store for him than his book deal and conversion to Catholicism… The Americans would like a word…
Seven episodes in and I’m still enjoying Torchwood. Yes, there was some bizarre continuity thing that went wrong after episode 4 (the Cyberwoman one) — Tom and I talked about it and guessed that they might have been forced to shuffle the episode order around after the series was written, and poor Ianto was left without adequate closure.
It’s a good team, good people, simple, but outrageously absurd stories… Strong, character driven fiction. And they’ve stuck in *so* much sexual tension in half a season that I quite simply have no idea where to look. What will happen next week? They’re actually going to run out of permutations of people who can kiss if they keep going at this rate… guest starring alien lesbian murderers notwithstanding.
And Indira Vharma looks like she might be back next week. Exciting!
Today was a good day. And there was me getting stressed about not having much planned for this weekend.
After nice, quiet drinks with Sheila, Dave, Afo and Chris at the pub last night was up at a sensible hour this morning, and finished reading the new Kevin Anderson novel. It is awesome – now have to wait frustratedly for the next one.
Then I caught up on phone calls to family and friends, which is always good.
Then I caught up on last week’s opening episodes of season 3 of Lost. Which was less obviously good, but I’ll reserve judgement.
