The Mobile Life

Disclaimer: T-Mobile is a client of my agency. I don’t work on the account, and receive no discount. The below, as ever, represents my personal opinion.

T-Mobile MDA Vario 2Last night I went to a friend’s birthday party at her place in North London. As a point of fact, I didn’t really know where I was going until after I’d left the house.

I was able to check the venue (using mobile Facebook), find it on Google Maps, and entertain myself playing bubble breaker when the Circle line proved unreliable. And mobile Gmail is pretty good, too. The fact that I have an unlimited data tariff (Web & Walk costs £7.50 a month) means I have no compunction about accessing these services either.

I’ve always been a bit of an early adopter, but given how much people are using services like Facebook and Gmail these days, I do wonder if this stuff has hit mainstream now. Are you using mobile web services? Why not, if not?

In point of fact, my phone, a HTC Hermes (the T-Mobile MDA Vario 2 incarnation thereof) has been annoying me of late. It’s been a bit unstable, slow etc. I’m in need of the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade. I’m waiting for the day that Coolsmartphone.com reports that its out for the Vario 2…

The Tangs

Been in Malaysia the last few days for my cousin’s wedding. Been amazing: lots of my cousins around, all on great form, and one of the first time in years that all my Dad’s siblings (all 7 of them!) were in the same room at the same time. Lots of, erm, singing, and an amazing quantity of quite ludicrous dancing.

My cousin set up the wedding for the morning, allowing people to sleep through the afternoon’s heat before making it to the reception in the evening. Even without my jetlag waylaying me, it was a great concept… Evening was huge fun and videos and photos will be uploaded on my return the UK. Congrats to Geets and Ivan — v. proud.

Bad dreams #34564: the Apple iCar

Pah, Steve Jobs won’t leave me alone. He invaded my subconscious. Last night, I dreamt I decided, in a spur of fancy and rebellion, to buy an Apple iCar. This doesn’t exist, but in my head it looked like a hybrid between a TVR and a Dodge Viper, had a docking cradle for the MacBook Pro that came with it, and cost £12,000.

None of which seem likely for the moment that Apple does enter the car market (quick prediction: 2018), but in my head it was also a hybrid. And Pescetarian. Which seem probable.

Now I’m annoyed with myself.

I’m sorry

I said I’d be there for you and I haven’t been. But you wanted me to listen more, and I have been. I’ve been listening carefully, but I just haven’t wanted to argue. Sometimes its best to sit back and let other people talk when you don’t really have anything to say, don’t you think? Isn’t that what we agreed?

No? You disagree?

Well, I’m sorry. That’s the way I feel, and I’m going now, to camp in the mud and the filth and the loud music and the fields of Glastonbury, and if you want to we can talk about this when I get back.

Good bye. Oh, please don’t cry, Blogosphere… I hate it when you cry. I promise I’ll try harder.

Uncle Genga

One of my Dad’s closest friends, and a constant visitor to our house since, well, forever from our perspective, passed away this weekend, in KL. It was rather sudden.

Although not technically a relative, Uncle Genga was family. A friend of my Dad’s since the early 70s, we know his family, we looked forward to him shouting up for Daddy as he walked around the neighbourhood in the evenings with his dog and/or his family, and I’m pretty sure he was strongly influential in my father buying the family home where he did (around the corner from Genga & family).

Uncle Genga was as proud of our successes as My Dad is of Genga’s son’s — and, whilst we didn’t speak a great deal, he would make a point of grabbing us when we visited home for holidays and ask us about each aspect of our life in turn. He loved a good story, and would spin yarns with my Dad and their other friends into the small hours of the morning. He was a constant, solid and reassuring presence through the proverbial good times and the bad, and we will all miss him a great deal.

I’m not a morning person

For the last couple of days, at least partially inspired by the fatbloggers, but also due to various other (personal) incentives, I’ve been waking up early to work out. A cycle lap around the park yesterday, and some light weight training this morning to remind my body of those muscles I’ve forgotten about… Hopefully the park again tomorrow.

Interestingly, its not the exercise that’s been causing me the most issues. Yes, its hard to motivate yourself, but when the sun is shining gloriously it’s a little easier. Rather, its the earliness of the morning. It hurts, but, as I knew I would, I have felt good during the day as a result.

That said, when I was doing my lap of Regents Park yesterday I was taken back to my school days, heading up to far distant school pitches at ungodly and unpleasantly cold hours of the morning… It was a strangely nostalgic moment.

Band

So I’m trying to get a band together. Facebook hasn’t proven helpful yet, so I placed an ad on Gumtree last night and have had four or five responses so far, which is brilliant. I love the interweb.

Not sure if any of them will suit at the moment – I need the right balance of people who like the same music as me, have the same level of commitment and the same level of talent.

Ad here, in case you’re interested:

Guitarist in search of band in Central London
Date: Thursday 12th April

Have guitar, will travel. Am of average skill, more enthusiasm, and varied taste. Would like to get involved in songwriting, gigging, could commit to one weekly practice.

Am a 26 year old professional with a sense of humour and a desire to have fun.

Some bands I like: The Offspring, Foo Fighters, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Metallica, Nirvana, G&R, RATM, Urusen, Sheryl Crow, Tenacious D, Smashing Pumpkins, Fratellis, Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Minutes, Sister Hazel &, well, lots more.

Can probably manage backing vocals, occasional bass etc. Have a bit of equipment too if people are interested in recording.

Let me know what you think. I will scour this site for ‘musicians wanted’ ads too. If you want to know more about me, check my blog – www.division6.co.uk

ill

I’m ill. Again. Hence scarcity of posting this weekend. I’ll write something good soon. In the meantime, tell me if there’s anything you’d like me to write about in the comments and I’ll do the first five things, as long as they are SFW.
